HP t5740: Windows

Windows 10

In January 2021 I heard from Peter. He had installed a 64GB SATA SSD in his t5740 and had installed Windows 10. As part of his venture he installed the utility SetFSB and found that he could happily overclock the CPU:

I have found that the 1.66MHz CPU can be overclocked using SetFSB quite reliably in Windows 10. Although the exact clock generator chip is not in the SetFSB pull down menu, a clock chip with a very similar number, the ICS9LPRS365BGLF, can be selected. I have the thin client running at 2GHz and this does make it noticeably zippier.

Overclocking the HP t5740

Overclocking Caveat

Integrated Circuits are designed to work over a range of temperatures and supply voltages. The post manufacturing tests are designed to to ensure that the circuit will perform correctly in worst case scenarios. The specification figures are also set to ensure that the manufacturer still gets a reasonable yield taking into account the possible variations in the manufacturing process. So it is guaranteed that what you've got will run faster than the specification figure, the question is how much faster?

If the semiconductor processing gods are on your side then the answer is maybe 'quite a bit'.

If you're able to exercise good control of the environment (such as cooling) then maybe 'a bit'.

All you can do is wind things up until it falls over and then wind things back a bit. How much you push the boundaries and maybe increase the possibility of instability in your system is up to you.

I don't know whether this is fact or fiction but, as you are pushing things beyond their design limits, there might be the possibility of permanent damage. My gut feel is that this possibility would arise where people have increased CPU supply voltages and/or let temperatures rise to high levels.

Windows XP

In March 2024 I heard from Yossi:

In order to install Windows XP you need to use an external CD rather than a flash drive. If you don't the system sees the USB flash drive as Drive C and the installation corrupts eventually.
