Wyse Xn0m: Hardware

Wyse Xn0m thin client

This is an example of the X Class laptop style thin client. It has a 14" screen and is powered by a dual core AMD G-T56N processor.

I think the series was launched back in 2012. My example was manufactured in November 2015.

At one point the product range covered:

  • X50m: Dell Wyse enhanced SUSE Linux: 2GB Flash / 2GB RAM
  • X90mw: Windows Embedded Standard 2009: 2GB Flash / 2GB RAM
  • X90m7: Windows Embedded Standard 7: 4GB Flash / 2GB RAM
  • X00m for WSM: 128GB SSD / 2GB RAM

My example came without any flash memory. The label identifies as it as a X90M7 with 16GB flash and 4GB of RAM. The OS was Windows Embedded Standard 7 (WS7E).

Power Supply

Mine came without a PSU but it uses a standard 19V 3.42A PSU. The connector is the popular 5.5mm/2.5mm coax plug.

Expansion

Access to the upgradeable parts is via a single panel on the bottom of the laptop. Click on the photo (right) for a larger view.

Flash: The flash memory is connected via a standard 7+15 way SATA connector. The photo shows an 8GB DOM that I fitted. There is space to accommodate a standard 2.5" SSD or hard drive should you wish to fit one although you will need to modify the existing tin work slightly if you do so.

RAM: There are two SODIMM sockets to take DDR3 RAM. The Data Sheet says DDR3 1333MHz and 4GB Max. I have fitted both DDR3 and DDR3L parts and have also had two 8GB SODIMMs fitted giving me 16GB of RAM.

mPCIe: There are two mini PCIe sockets. One has WLAN moulded into the plastic nearby and is fitted with a Qualcomm Atheros wireless card. The other, which is empty other than two unconnected antenna leads, is marked in the plastic as 3G. I have not tried anything in this socket.

If you look closely at the side of the unit by the microphone socket there is a narrow slot in the plastic but no connector behind it that I can see. My guess is where a smart card reader would be fitted.

Extras

Also listed in the specification

  • Media card reader slot for additional storage
  • Built-in 1.3 mega pixel camera and microphone
  • ExpressCard slot (factory option)
  • Smart card reader (Factory installed configuration option)

I commented on the smart card reader above. As to the 'Media Card Reader' I can find no trace of one. I assume the ExpressCard slot may well be accompanied by new plastics as it is a factory fit option.

Oddity

The board is fitted with a CR3020 battery to backup the CMOS. My experience is that most laptops rely on the main battery for this purpose. In this case it is a bonus as removing it (and the main battery) lets you reset any BIOS password that is set. Such passwords are often stored in some onboard EEPROM giving you more of a problem to bypass them.
