IGEL D200: Hardware

Igel D200 Thin Client

As can be seen in the photographs my Igel D200 came without any mounting foot. The datasheet does say:

"CAUTION: Standard deployment of the device is in vertical position, horizontal deployment only supported with optional rubber feet!"

Igel D200 label The unit carries a label identifying it as a D200. A (rare) data sheet on the D200 identifies it as belonging to the Igel UD2 series. Looking at the end-of-life list there is mention of:

  • UD2 series CE (Generation 2)
  • UD2 series ES (Generation 2)
  • UD2 series LX (Generation 2)
  • UD2 series LX (Generation 3)

As far as I can determine the UD2 (Generation 2) is the D200 with a 400MHz or 500MHz processor whilst the UD2 (Generation 3) is the D210 which has a VIA Eden ULV 1GHz CPU, VIA Vx855 chipset, 2GB of flash and 1GB of RAM.

Note: A data sheet I found on the D200 lists it as having a 400MHz processor. I ended up buying a batch of four. Three of these have a 400MHz processor, one has a 500MHz processor. It looks like IGEL uprated the CPU at some point, but nothing I can see externally can let you find out which you have other than powering it up. The BIOS in the 400MHz units is dated 10/23/2008 whilst that in the 500MHz unit is dated 07/08/2010.

The D200 reached end-of-life status in September 2011 and support continued until October 2014.

There is nothing on the hardware that explicitly indicates the date of manufacture, but maybe it is coded into the serial number. The serial numbers of my four begin: 0811... 1005... 1006... 1101... This is not inconsistent with it being YYMM... The last one - January 2011 - is the one that runs at 500MHz.

When my 500MHz D200 boots into the Igel Universal Desktop it identifies itself as an UD2-121 LX

Power Supply

The IGEL D200 uses an external 12V supply with a conventional coaxial connector: 5.5mm x 2.5mm.

Memory

Both the Flash memory and the RAM in the D200 are easily replaceable.

Flash:The flash memory is a 1GB Compact Flash card plugged into a socket on the rear of the motherboard.

RAM:There is a single 200-pin DDR2 SODIMM socket for the RAM. The 512MB DIMM supplied with the unit is labelled: 512MB DDR2 PC533 CL4 and is manufactured by Transcend. The D200 data sheet says: "DDR2-533 SO-DIMM x 1 (up to 1 GB)"
