Fujitsu Futro S740: Hardware

Wyse Cx0

I do not own a S740. Some of the photographs and the information presented here came from Marc (thank you Marc). The rest has been gleaned from the Internet and Fujitsu's product information.

Overview

The Fujitsu Futro S740 is a small neat unit that is based on a Fujitsu mini-STX motherboard (D3544). The S740 was announced in April 2018.

The FUTRO S740, featuring an updated, ultra-small desktop chassis in a new compact design

The size of the chassis for the S740 has been reduced by about 63% compared with the previous S720/N model, while maintaining the same level of interface expandability, delivering support for features such as Wi-Fi, USB, and external displays. Making the chassis more compact has reduced its desktop footprint for a refined-looking layout.

It uses an Intel embedded Gemini Lake SoC (System on Chip, 10W TDP) and DDR4 2400 SDRAM Memory. As usual the datasheet on the motherboard I've managed to track down is for the D3544-S, not the -A1. Usually the -S suffix is for a fully-loaded board. -A and -B variants may not include every option.

Whilst the -S board is available with three Intel processor options:

  • Celeron Processor J4005 (DC @2.7GHz), integrated Intel UHD Graphics 600 (12EUs @700MHz)
  • Celeron Processor J4105 (QC @2.5GHz), integrated Intel UHD Graphics 600 (12EUs @750MHz)
  • Pentium Silver Processor J5005 (QC @2.8GHz), integrated Intel UHD Graphics 605 (18EUs @800MHz)

...the S740 comes fitted with the Quad Core J4105. There is no other CPU option.

At the same time the S540 was announced. This is very similar but is based on the D3544-B which has a J4005 dual core CPU fitted.

Going to the Fujitsu support site it looks a S740 could be running one of:

  • eLuxRP
  • Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2019 LTSC
  • Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2016 LTSB

Marc's S740 came with 4GB of RAM and 16GB flash.

Power Supply

Marc's S740 came with a 40W external power supply (20V/2A ADP-40PH AD). The connector is a standard 5.5mm/2.5mm coax connector. The D3544-S datasheet gives the supply voltage of the motherboard as 8-24V so it may well run quite happily off a 12V adapter.

CPU

The S740 is fitted with an Intel Quad Core core J4105 CPU.

Motherboard S740 motherboard

As always, click on the photo right for a larger version.

The details I can find on Fujitsu's site are all about the D3544-S. The S740 is fitted with the D3544-A1 board which I assume is fitted out with a subset of the -S version.

Expansion

Flash: The board is fitted with two M.2 sockets one of which is fitted with a SATA SSD. (Bottom left in the motherboard photo). The other M.2 socket is there for a standard WLAN card.

S740 M.2 sockets

The D3544-S manual reads:

2 x Serial ATA (SATA) III 600 Interface (up to 6GBit/s), NCQ, AHCI;
1 x M.2 Key B socket (2242 / 2260 / 2280) for following applications:
  - SATA based M.2 SSD modules
  - PCIe based M.2 SSD modules (one PCI lane)
  - Specific M.2 PCIe-based extension modules like LAN, SATA, COM, etc.
Boot support: AHCI / NVME
Note: M.2 (SATA) is shared with SATA port 1

In the above the first line refers to two SATA DATA sockets that are NOT fitted in the S740. You can see the tracks for them in the bottom right of the photo above. These are referred to as SATA0 and SATA1. I take it that the 'Note:' at the end is saying that the SATA1 interface is also connected to the SSD M.2 socket. (i.e. anyone with a -S board can use either the M.2 socket or the SATA1 socket but not both).

So we have a M.2 socket (left) for a SATA SSD and a M.2 socket (right) for a WLAN/Bluetooth or whatever.

RAM: The board is tracked for a single (1.2V) SODIMM socket. The D3544-S datasheet says max. 16GB, DDR4 - 2400 (CL17) / 2133 (CL15) SDRAM, unbuffered, non-ECC.

The SODIMM fitted was a 4GB Samsung part : S4CXA20949359298B3 1Rx16 PC4-2666V-SC0-11.

Marc reported he was able to use a 16 GB DDR4 SO-DIMM - Apacer AS16GGB26CQYBGH 2666 MHz with CL19 timings.

It sounds like the S740, like some other modern thin clients, runs additional POST tests anytime it finds that the installed RAM has changed. Expect long(er) POST delays immediately after you've changed the RAM SODIMM.

USB: There are two USB sockets on the front and four on the rear. The S740 datasheet mentions one internal USB connector. This is the 20-pin header that can be seen middle-bottom in the photo above. This is the connection point for 2 x USB3 ports and I assume this where the optional USB3 Type C connector connects to. There is also an additional internal USB2.0 port which is available at the top of the motherboard but no header is fitted for it in the S740.

WLAN: There is a M.2 Key B socket on the board where you could fit a wireless card. (See the Flash section above).

Serial: The header close to the power socket (top left in the motherboard photo) is where the optional serial port connects.

POE

Futro S740 POE option
There is a POE option. Exactly where and how it fits I'm not too sure.
