HP t630: Hardware

HP t630 Thin Client

The HP t630 was launched in August 2016. Initially I didn't have one and the information presented here came from HP's publicity material and from Emma who did have one.

Power Supply

The t630 is supplied with a 65W 19.5V 3.33A DC supply. The connector is male coaxial connector. According to my micrometer the external diameter of the barrel is 7.4mm, the internal diameter 5mm. I don't what the size is of the recessed centre pin. This is also used by various HP laptops and so a suitable PSU should be easy to find on eBay.

If you don't have an HP PSU/charger and are thinking of using a non-HP PSU see this page.

CPU

The CPU fitted to the t630 is from AMD's Embedded G-Series System-on-Chip (SOC). The one fitted to the t630 is a quad core AMD GX-420GI with Radeon(tm) R7E HD Graphics. As I've found before with some AMD SOCs used in thin clients, neither Google nor the search engine on AMD's own site can find any mention of the GX-420GI in any AMD documentation. However HP's t630 datasheet does say:

"This HP version of AMD's 3rd Generation AMD Embedded G-Series SoC (GX-420GI) has enhanced features over the generic version (GX-417GI) documented on the AMD website."

...but doesn't indicate what the enhancements are.

In March 2022 I heard from Robert who sent me this link: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_accelerated_processing_units

Expansion

Flash: The board is designed to take two M.2 SSDs. The primary socket is designed to take M.2 flash modules up to 2280. The secondary socket will accommodate modules up to 2242. In December 2021 I heard from Nick who reported that the M.2 sockets are for SATA SSDs, not NVME.

RAM: There are two on-board sockets to take DDR4 SODIMMs. The datasheet gives the data transfer rate as 1,866 MT/s and the maximum memory as 32GB. Emma fitted two 16GB Crucial parts - CT16G4SFD8266.

In November 2020 I heard from Carl who had successfully tried out two 32GB Crucial parts - CT32G4SFD8266 - to get 64GB of RAM. See the Using tab.

USB: There are a plethora of USB connections in the t630. There are four sockets on the front panel. Two of these are USB2.0 and two are to the USB 3.0 standard. The rear panel carries two USB 2.0 sockets. Finally there is a single internal USB 3.0 socket.

Note: The t630 will not boot from the internal USB port.

HP t630 internal USB socket

There is a reasonable amount of space around the internal USB socket. I would imagine most normal USB pen drives will fit. A 'novelty' one might be a different matter.

WiFi: The t630 has a M.2 2230 slot for a wireless network card. This may be fitted with one of: Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3168 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo adapter or a Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo adapter

The photo shows where the two flash SSDs are fitted on the t630. The silk-screen printing on the board makes it obvious where the various sizes of the M.2 drive fit.

Adjacent to the flash M.2 sockets is the USB3.0 connector for an internal flash drive and the M.2 connector for the WiFi/Bluetooth board.
