Trying out a couple of distributions I found:
Tinycore (3.0) booted from a compact flash card connected to the IDE
interface and ran without problems, as did Tiny core 4.2 from a USB drive.
I had no problems running Tiny Core 9.0 on my revisit in June 2018.
