Wyse Xn0m: Firmware

BIOS

The DEL key will get you into the Phoenix SecureCore Tiano BIOS.

My BIOS is Version 2.0E dated 07/17/2013.

As with a lot of thin client BIOSs there are only a few basic things you can change such as the SATA mode and enabling/disabling the USB ports.

The BOOT screen gives the option of:

  1. SATA 0: TSITHSD370S-8G
  2. USB HDD:
  3. PXE LAN: Realtek PCE B03 D00
  4. USB FDC:
  5. USB CD-ROM:

This is one with just five fixed options and the BIOS fills in the details of what it can find following the ':' on the line.

BIOS Password

The unit had been advertised as 'BIOS PASS LCKD'. I found that the default password of Fireport got me in.

Before the laptop arrived I was a little worried as the listing showed that, having entered an incorrect password three times, you get locked out with an error message giving you a hexadecimal eight character string.

ERROR
System Locked  A47DA18C

In these circumstances the hexadecimal string lets you generate a password that will get you in, but in order to do this you either need the software that the Wyse support desk have or you need to know the hash algorithm that is used to get from the entered password to the stored hash value. Google found me nothing in relation to the password hash algorithms for the Xn0m.

However, unusually for a laptop, the Xn0m has an accessible standard BIOS battery. I found that removing the laptop battery and then briefly pulling the coin cell reset the BIOS password to the default of Fireport.

The only problem I had was that a piece of the plastic BIOS battery holder broke off - possibly due to plastic fatigue? I glued it back into place before refitting the battery.
