Fujitsu S900: Using

Using the S900

In July 2019 I heard from Oleksandr who was using his S900 as a media centre running OpenELEC along with the Yatse app on his Android phone. He had used a standard right-angled PCI riser to add an Asus Xonar DG sound card to provide a Dolby 5.1 digital output.

He reports that the S900 "...is able to play 20 gigs full hd bd rips...as well as some online video from 3rd party web sites" .

In May 2024 I heard from Bartosz. His S900 had a different cooling arrangement which is covered under the Variant tab. He also added:

From OSes perspective I was able to install:

  • NetBSD 10
  • OpenBSD 7.4
  • Chimera Linux
  • Alpine Linux 3.19
  • Void Linux (glibc and musl)
  • Windows 98SE

I did not come across any issues with using them except for Win98SE - there are no iGPU drivers so it can work only with VGA driver. No luck with old AMD drivers or VESA. For me the BIOS was not locked (no password), but it did behave oddly. Any changes I made to the boot order were reset after a reboot. However there is a specific option 'USB first' which you can set so you can still boot from a USB pen drive.

For a long time I used this thin client as a Snowflake proxy and Syncthing server, but now only occasionally playing around with it when have any ideas and the time to check them out.
