VXL Itona: Firmware

BIOS

The Itonas are fitted with a Phoenix AwardBIOS. Hit the DEL key on power-up to get into the BIOS setup screens. I was not aware of that some of the Itona BIOSes have a default password that may be set. Mike Arney discovered this and also tracked down that it is drupad.

There are some differences in the BIOS across the Itona range. Unfortunately version numbers tend to be displayed for milliseconds before being scrolled off the screen so I've extracted a few relevant strings from the BIOS ROM from each model.

If you're interested I used the command:

tc@box# dd if=/dev/mem bs=65536 skip=14 count=2 | strings -n8 | more

Updates

The latest firmware used be found on the VXL website ftp.vxl.net. This has vanished and you now need to fill in a form to request updated firmware.

TC23xx

Bin Sun discovered that the latest BIOS for his TC2331 refused to boot anything from the hard disk he installed. It stopped with the message:

SW not supported, system halted

It turned out that the last TC2331 BIOS specifically will not boot from anything on the IDE interface that is larger than 64MB. (The BIOS release notes indicate that the previous version just applied this restriction to the master drive, not the slave). His solution was to flash the motherboard with the BIOS from the TC4331. (Both models use the same motherboard).

In June 2017 I had an email from Matt who had been after updating the BIOS on a TC4331. After some searching he found this support page for the C7V7-CSI on Gigabyte's website.

"I downloaded the BIOS listed there, and flashed it onto my TC4331 (GA-C7V7VX-RH) and it's worked fine.

As a note - I had to flash it via the current BIOSs built in Q-Flash, and not using the AWDFLASH.EXE tool that's in the download. I did it via a USB Floppy Drive. I now have a copy of Windows XP (as a test) running fine on this motherboard."

The BIOS (version F11) is here.

Firmware

The Itonas run one of: Linux, Windows CE or Windows XP.
