eMMC upgrade

There are amongst us those with the necessary skills and tools who carry out more adventurous modifications to their thin clients. One such is Vladislav who emailed me in June 2025:

Some time ago for a few bucks I bought several N06Ds at a local internet auction. These days 4GB of flash memory is too small for a lot of applications so I decided to replace the 4GB eMMC chips by 16GB chips. (Here I should mention that I'm an Electronics Engineer and have good soldering skills and the appropriate equipment). It was a simple matter of desoldering/removing the 4GB chip and soldering in a replacement 16GB chip. It just works! No need to change the BIOS or anything else!

One oddity is that in the BIOS it reports the wrong size for the new chip but that doesn't matter. In Linux I see the full 16GB and can use it. With this particular thin client I've installed HomeAssistant.

The starting point. BIOS shows a 4GB Hynix part in place.

Here the chip is on the motherboard.

Following the application of the heat gun the original eMMC chip has been removed....

....to be replaced by a 16GB Samsung part.

The BIOS recognises the eMMC as a Samsung part but still reports the size as 4GB(?)

However the Linux OS does see the correct size of 16GB.
