Wyse 3040 (N10D): Links

Links

Here you will find links to useful articles on the Dell Wyse 3040 that I or others have spotted.

An entry on Rob's Blog about the 3040 and UEFI booting.

More from Rob's Blog: A four part posting entitled Turning a 3040 into an HTPC.

I also found Roy who was running Xubuntu on his 3040.

A blog entry describing the 3040.

In June 2022 Dan pointed me at another comprehensive blog entry on running Linux on the 3040. https://sagacioussuricata.com/posts/wyse-3040/

<digression>The author of the above does make the odd comment about Dell and their BIOS implementation and how things boot. What you have to remember is that what the manufacturer is selling is a pre-shrink package of hardware and software. Thin clients are not sold as a chunk of hardware for others to install a different OS on. If we choose to do so we have to put up with the quirks of what we're presented with. All the manufacturer is interested in is that their particular OS build boots and runs on the supplied hardware. It is also why the BIOSs in thin clients are often fairly sparse in the setup options they offer. Why offer the ability to switch virtualisation on and off if it is not used/required by your OS/application? </digression>

In February 2023 René from Germany pointed me at a posting on Reddit where he describes replacing the eMMC chip with a higher capacity one:

He also included another link where somebody else had done the same:

In November 2023 I heard from Andras who pointed me at another article on Installing a new OS on the Wyse 3040

In March 2024 Eka found a Blog with a series of three articles starting with Misusing the Dell Wyse 3040 Thin Client. It leads up to running OpenWrt on a 3040.
